The Rothman Spine Research Fellowship is a unique opportunity that will allow the candidate to work closely with Dr. Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, PhD, MBA, Dr. Gregory D. Schroeder, MD, Dr. Christopher K. Kepler, MD, MBA, and Dr. Jose A. Canseco MD, PhD.Dr. Alexander R. Vaccaro, MD, PhD, MBA is the Richard H. Rothman Professor and Chairman in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the President of the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute. He has over 900 peer-reviewed publications, 200 non-peer reviewed publications, over 370 book chapters, and is the editor of over 63 textbooks. Dr. Vaccaro is a distinguished, internationally renowned spine surgeon and is one of the most famous spine surgeons globally.Dr. Gregory Schroeder is the current editor-in-chief of Clinical Spine Surgery, a high impact spine journal.Dr. Christopher Kepler and Dr. Jose Canseco are highly accomplished clinical and basic science researchers. They will be able to guide interested medical students on appropriate research methodology, statistics, and manuscript preparation.Dr. Vaccaro and the rest of the spine team will help the research fellows in their pursuit of an orthopaedic surgery residency, offering guidance into the application process, tips on how to succeed as a future orthopaedic surgeon, and letters of recommendation to help match into orthopaedics.The Spine Department at Rothman is one of the most productive spine departments in the country, and motivated applicants can expect to have around 20 publications over the course of the year. This position is ideal for a student hoping to match into an orthopaedic surgery residency position. The attendings in the department are very supportive of the research fellows and will help you in the application process. There are many projects both new and ongoing that the research fellow will help to complete, with first authorship opportunities for any project that you significantly contribute to.Duties Include:
- Trial design and management of retrospective and prospective studies
- Submission of protocols to the IRB
- Obtaining informed consent
- Data collection and management
- Statistical analysis and data interpretation
- Abstract submission and poster presentations at national conferences
- Manuscript preparation and submission
- Extensive writing/editing of book chapters, narrative reviews, editorials, etc.
- Managing/leading a team of medical students working on projects in the departmentAccepted Applicants will also have the chance to:
- Interact with the residents, fellows, and attendings throughout the course of the year on a variety of projects
- Attend Grand Rounds
- Shadow in clinic and the ORDesired Characteristics of Applicants include:

- Having demonstrated prior research experience, preferably in a surgical subspecialty
