Dr. Howard An and Dr. Dino Samartzis invite a 3rd year medical student to apply for a year-long clinical spine research fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
As the research fellow, duties will include:
-Coordination of all research projects
-Drafting and submitting IRB and grant proposals
-Interacting with and recruiting patients in clinic and operating room
-Statistical analysis
-Organizing and developing the current or new databases
-Management of medical students
-Presentation of studies at regional, national, and/or international meetings
-Scientific writing of textbook book chapters and journal articles for publication
Term: 1 year

Dr. Howard An is a Professor and the Morton International Endowed Chair at Rush. He is an accomplished clinician-scientist, Past President of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), Kappa Delta Award Winner, immediate past Director of the Division of Spine Surgery at RUSH for 14 years, and has been the Director of Spine Surgery Fellowship at RUSH for the past 20 years.
Dr. Dino Samartzis is an Associate Professor at Rush. He is an accomplished clinical researcher with 20 years experience in spine research worldwide. He is the Deputy Editor of the Global Spine Journal, Executive Board Editor of the European Spine Journal, and Chair of the International Research Commission for AOSpine, the world’s largest society of spine surgeons. His research work has been the recipient of over 50 regional and international awards.
Applicants should be:
-Motivated to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery
-Detail oriented, organized, and able to self-manage
-Able to work independently as well as within a team
-Interested in research activities and academics, open to learning new research skills
-Passionate for scientific publishing
-Familiarity with Stata, SPSS, or other statistics software is recommended

-Expect to have 10+ publications by the end of the fellowship, including first authorship on multiple papers.

-Guidance with application for orthopaedic surgery residency
