scramble advice - please help!

I didn't match and I will be scrambling tomorrow. I want to give it ortho one more try and am looking for a game plan for tomorrow to try and match into ortho next year.

I hear people say that a research year or a year of prelim surg is the way to go. The problem is is that I do not know which specific programs to look at.

What paid research positions that put out lots of publications and ability to get ortho contacts are out there?

Which prelim surg programs would be good if I want to do ortho next year? Yes, I know I would want to go somewhere that is middle of the road and has a history of taking their prelim surg applicants, but what specific programs are those?

I'd really appreciate any help before tomorrow when scramble starts. Thanks and congrats to everyone who matched and good luck to people who are scrambling like myself.

I knew a kid who did a research year there, got lots of good pubs out of it and ended up matching into the program the following year. Good luck.

Well, I matched. I'm doing a paid NIH training grant position at UCSD. Ortho research in San Diego, what could be better? The only drawback is that you sign a two-year contract with the NIH to do research. The 6-year research programs fulfil the 2nd year of the contract. So if you really want to do ortho, you're in for 7 years til you graduate. I really wanted to do ortho, so I signed up. I think it was a great decision.

I was in a similar position last year, tried to find a spot through the ortho scramble, but was unsuccessful. Don't do an intern year (I applied to a bunch, then came to my senses). Do the research, it will help you in your career, help you get lots of ortho interviews, make connections, and maybe get interested in research for the long run.

UCSD has two spots opening up this summer, I believe. Stay tuned for contact info.
