When: Beginning Approx. July-August 2017

Under the direction of Dr. Eric Makhni and Dr. Vasilios (Bill) Moutzouros in the Division of Sports Medicine at Henry Ford

We are seeking two ambitious 3rd and 4th year medical students (prefer 3rd year) who are interested in a year-long research fellowship. Research topics include kinematic and motion studies of baseball players, outcome collection in patients with shoulder conditions, and topics within healthcare policy, quality, and economics studies (cost-effectiveness research).

Duties of the research coordinator will include:
• Coordination of all research projects
• Statistical analysis of data
• Understanding and learning cost-analyses
• Helping co-author and edit sports medicine book chapters and review articles
• Submission of protocol to the IRB
• Submission of manuscripts to journals (including target journals of JBJS, AJSM, CORR, and Arthroscopy)
• Assisting in video creation for technique chapters

Specific prerequisites and characteristics of the coordinator should include:
• Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
• Proven interest in research
• MUST be extremely organized
• MUST be detail oriented
• Must be able to self manage
• Strong academic record

Benefits of the position:
• The fellow should expect to have at least 5-10 publications by the end of the research year
• The fellow should expect authorship at all submitted abstracts for presentation
• Fellow will have the ability to be 1st author on all papers that he/she significantly contributes to
• This will undoubtedly bolster and enhance competitiveness for a position in an orthopaedic surgery residency
• Opportunities to observe surgical procedures (project permitting)
• Ample opportunities to present research at Orthopaedic/Sports Conferences
• Additionally, Dr. Moutzouros is the residency Program Director and can offer insight into the application process, letters of recommendation, and strengthening of the applicant’s candidacy.
• Dr Makhni and Dr. Moutzouros expect all applications to be able to match into Orthopaedic Surgery and will help the candidate during the match process.
