thanks
If you've done well in school and did well on Step I's you're going to get interviews and most likely a spot in ortho. Being a former PT, it's not going to hurt you. I know some people going into ortho and current ortho residents that are former PT's and I feel like they are a bit ahead of the game. Just have some increased experience and something more to talk about at their interviews. Hope this helps.

I would not hesitate to mention in your personal statement that you were a former PT and that's what sparked your interest in orthopaedics. Unlike most people, you have life experience that motivated you to pursue orthopedics. This will help you, but just don't overdo it.

Physical therapists and orthopods work very closely together as you know. A reasonable orthopedic surgeon will look at your experience as a very positive thing. Not only are you ahead of the game in terms of knowledge starting residency, but you'll have a unique perspective later on in your practice by virtue of your PT experience. But be careful because like in all walks of life, some orthopods are egotists and idiots who look down on anyone who is not an MD and specifically an orthopedic surgeon. I work with a couple of attendings that are like this and they think they walk on water and their %&@#! don't stink. If you overdo it with the PT talk, they may frown on it.

So be clear about your past and what sparked your interest in ortho (or medical school in the first place). It's very reasonable and most importantly is THE TRUTH! But as with anything else, use common sense and know the character you're dealing with and don't overdo it. If during your interview someone engages you in this topic, fine. But don't force it into the conversation if they don't seem interested.
