Hey, in a bit of a bind. Really wanna do this one away but found out only month of Dec and July open. July would be my first rotation - any probs with making this an away (wet around he collar, attendings forgetting about you by time of rank, people being too disoriented at start of year to pay any attention, etc), plus if i did this I wouldnt have my home ortho till 4th block which would be after september and wouldn't show up on my ERAS (or would it, and is this a problem?)
And also- would dec be bad cause I'd have to go on interviews during an away, or do they not really start till Jan. Or should I just chill the f**k out - thing is i really wanna match at this prog.

If I were you I would take the July slot. Its true that a little amnesia might set in by the time the attendings get togeather to make a rank list but....by doing one in July you can get letters from them, put it in your application, and remind them how much they liked you. The problem with the Dec. slot is you will probably have interviews during this month and you don't want to cancel interviews or leave a rotation at your dream program to interview somewhere else.....that would be BAD!

What up,

I'm doing an away in July. Originally I thought it would be too early, but it's just the way my schedule worked out. If you like the program that much and think they may forget your pretty grill by the time interviews roll around, you can always go back for a few days with that much-maligned "second look."

When it comes down to it, there are only so many days in the year before interviews. Take what you can get.

sound advice guys. whatdya think about having to bump my home rotation to sep-oct? is that gonna make it too late for it too show up on my app-Ive heard you should have a home rotation in your first three to make it show on your app in time - any truth? and is it even important to have it show? (obviously I can still add on letters to it, but does the home timing matter?) ):)

Here's how I thought about it. I wanted to do the rotation at my home institution first. I knew many of the residents and a few of the attendings. I figured since I would have more than one month to impress I would do ortho at home in July. Plus it helped to get letters and such. Plus I made all my mistakes, learned tricks, received hints, ect. before I went to my away several months later. This way I was maximally prepared for my away, which is where I matched. Just my own approach, may not be best for you. I'd be a little cautious about doing an away as your first ortho rotation. Not that you shouldn't do it but just be cautious. Good luck

I'm doing my home rotation in November, and this is at the advice of my program director. It also depends on how much interest you have in your home program. This may be late if you still need letters. Fortunately, I already have some letters squared away from home docs. By doing it late, I'll be fresh in the minds of the docs come interview time.

I've never been told that you need to have a home rotation on your app. In addition, I know plenty of people that matched at great programs who did a home rotation after apps were in. At my school they included the students proposed 4th year schedual in the Deans letter...check it out--maybe they do the same at your school.

Only problem with rotating at home late:

Over 90% of the programs that I applied to wanted a "Chairman's letter" as part of their app requirements. Just something to think about. But I assume you mean October when you say 4th block. If that's so, you have plenty of time to rotate at home and get your chairman's letter.
