I went to Tulane for medical school and I am currently a resident at UAB.
Tulane is a good program which is pretty trauma heavy. Charity hospital is not the nicest place to be and the hours can be long. At Tulane hospital, you do peds, spine, hand, tumor, joints. Their chairman passed away recently. Their new chairman is a great guy. Dr. Barrack their program director has left and gone to St. Louis(?). I don't know who is there now. Overall a good program. Some negatives are that they used to send their residents to Atlanta and to Alexandria, LA for about a total of 1 year out of their residencty. Don't know if that has changed.
UAB is also a great program. The new hospital has just opened (2 weeks ago). There are brand new ORs, Wards, etc. UAB is the only level 1 trauma center in Alabama and gets referrals from Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Florida panhandle. Trauma is heavy. We also have great exposure in Spine, Joints, Tumor, Pediatrics, Sports, and Hand. Our new chairman is from the Cleveland Clinic and specializes in hand. We rotate with Dr. Andrews and Dr. Lemak at American Sports Medicine Institute for 3 months. We have morning report every morning to discuss on call cases. Every Tuesday from 3pm-6pm are our didactic conferences. Grand rounds are every thursday, and journal club is the first monday of each month.
