Does anyone have any insights into New Mexico?

Hi Guys/ Gals,
Does anyone have any inside info about New Mexico? There was some suggestion
that this programs was extra call heavy. Also, how's the balance between subspecialties-including
sports?

New Mexico

I rotated at UNM this summer. Great program. Call isn't bad at all. You're in house roughly q4, but only
for 6 months of PGY1,2,3. After that and for the other 6 months each year you're home call. Sports is
really good here to. Dr. Schenck and Wascher are world renouned for Knee dislocation reconstruction.
The classification is named after Schenck. Solid program, although a bit trauma heavy. At the university
hospital, there are two teams, both take trauma and then some-what divide up the rest of the services,
although there are no true "services" as each team also takes a hodgepodge of everything.

I rotated in NM earlier this year. Totally agree w/ previous post. Program is well represented in all areas, Trauma, Joint, Sports, Spine, Peds, Hand, and Tumor. Faculty are great, very approachable. Multiple research opportunities available. The residents work hard but are happy. Generally a good group of guys. Call on trauma is 8-9 times per month with two weekends off. The other weekends you work a Fri/Sun and a Sat. Call in the summer months can be busy, ie 20-25 consults per call. You won't get to sleep much. You have a lot of autonomy but backup is always available. All in all a very solid program. Graduates are well trained for general ortho practice, but many get good fellowships and have gone into academic careers. There are good didactics. Hope that helps. :roll smile:
