Can't speak from personal experience, but a college friend of mine who is now a second year said that it was the worst place he interviewed out of 14/15. He was rather unimpressed with the residents and amount of trauma in comparision to his home program and others, and this guy interviewed at all of the top programs from adjacent or near the Mason Dixon, South of there, and into Texas. Also, if you look on their website, there is a large percentage of FMGs currently, which may mean they just attract stellar candidates from The Netherlands and China, or they have a hard time getting stellar residents from the US. I don't know, you decide.
P.S. Seems to me that it would be hard to have a really good ortho program in a town as small and isolated as Charlottesville, although that region is wonderful.

Here's another second hand account. One of last year's students who interviewed at about 30 places, including some of the top places, ended up ranking it in his top 5. Sorry I can't provide more info.

I think UVA wants its applicants to be in the top 10% of either boards or grades, can't remember which.

i really liked this place last year. granted, i only got to see the place on interview day, but i was impressed. they do a ridiculous amount of trauma because they spend 4 months a year of a couple of years at roanoke. the "FMGs" were not your typical FMGs by any stretch. also, the rest of their residents are some of the nicest guys that i have met. seemed to have pretty good coverage. the town is a great college town and you get to work closely with the college teams. seemed like almost everyone except me at the interview day had done a rotation there. that's what i remember.

Spent a month at UVA an loved it! The residents were very down to earth and very competent. Cville is one of the best places to live in the country. Admittly the downside is going away for 40 weeks. Rumor has it that it is going to change. Still an excellent program with great faculty with lots of young blood and energy!

i spent a month at UVA, which was fine overall. you have to like small towns and outdoors activities (fishing, hiking, even hunting). the hospital itself is new and impressive, the staff friendly. the residents were mostly very friendly, though a few preferred to ignore or not treat students optimally. the faculty themselves were hit or miss in terms of quality attention to students; they seemed to relate well to residents, though. the university itself has amazing athletic facilities which residents utilize, a plus. residents also seemed happy by and large. importantly, the program seemed very homogenous with white southern men, with some exceptions, but it was a little disconcerting at conference to see a sea of the same. it depends on your personal preferences whether this is an issue at all. in the end, it will be the location (i need more external stimuli that charlottesville provides) and lack of diversity among residents that will cause me not to rank this program.
