same place as the stats from yesterday. log into the nrmp web page and go to "my reports". you can download a .pdf version of the listings for all specialties with openings (including ortho).

General Surgery by far did the worst this year in the unfilled category...you could SCRAMBLE into the following CATEGORICAL gen surg programs:
UCSF, Dartmouth, Yale, Northwestern, Emory, Rush, NYU, UNC, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Temple, Mt. Sinai, Tulane, and a bunch more!!

Wow!

It's amazing how the number of applicants has dropped for gen surg...i hear there's going to be a shortage of gen surgeons in 5-10 years.

I know it's a miserable lifestyle...but someone's got to do them appendectomies and cholecystectomies...

I expect things to change a bit in the future.

I don't Gen Surg will see a resurgence until they reform the lifestyle issues of their training. There simply aren't enough masochists out there willing to kill themselves for five years and not get the money and family-friendly lifestyle that other specialties offer. Years ago surgeons made tons of money and that was enough of a draw to overcome the malignancy of the training (I've been told by a gen surg attending that they frequently actually lose money on hernia repairs now because reimbursements are so low). Now the specialty doesn't have that to offer over others like ortho, ob-gyn, ENT, etc. Gen Surg purists will preach that the killer hours are necessary to become proficient, but I haven't seen any evidence that they are right about that. Applicants that want to operate are naturally gravitating to the more "friendly" specialties that still allow them to operate but that don't require five years of q3 call.

No amount of money would make belly surgery attractive to me, but if I didn't match ortho and still had a passion to operate, the gen surg lifestyle would still pose a huge deterrent for going that road for me.

That's what I'm referring to...there may be a change in the way the specialty approaches training...or the reimbursements may go up.

Correction: The programs you list did not fill their PRELIM positions. So, while, I agree, one must be insane to be a general surgeon, there appears to be enough mental illness in med students to fill those positions.

Just fillin' time till Thursday...

It's possible that many of these positions will be filled by those who did not match for surgical subspecialties- I can't imagine many people would go from wanting to do ENT, urology, ortho, etc. to doing medicine or family practice. Many people who want to apply again will choose the prelim positions in particular, especially if they're at a top level program such as the ones mentioned.

I received an E-mail from the King/Drew program back in February that stated that they had decided to fill their spots outside of the match this year (don’t know why). I was offered an interview in April if I was still available (unmatched). Since I received good news on Monday I won’t be following up on the offer.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow.
