I had a question about vacation time as a resident. I know a lot of programs show they have 3-4 weeks of vacation. Do programs allow you to take weeks back to back?

Thanks in advance
potentially if you use 1 week in 2 different months. Otherwise its tough to squeeze all your calls into a 2 week period.

this may vary from program to program.

i know some general surgery programs schedule two residents to split a month-long rotation, so you get two weeks of vacation and two weeks on the service. that way the service never goes uncovered. in those programs, you are required to take your vacations in two week blocks.

most of the ortho programs with which i am familiar prefer you to take one week vacation blocks. they may make an exception for special circumstances like a wedding/honeymoon (your wedding, not someone elses).

At my program, we can take one week of vacation during each 3 month rotation. Theoretically, we could take the last week of one rotation and the first of another, but that would be frowned upon. With orthopaedic surgery, at least where I am training, the call pool is stretched pretty thin. So if one person is gone too long it places quite a burden on the others, making it nearly impossible to work out consecutive weeks of vacation.
