The Peripheral Nerve Research Scholar Program in Orthopaedic Surgery is being offered by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. This program is designed to provide a one to two-year mentored research experience centered on investigation of the pathophysiology and treatment of peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries. The selected scholar will gain hands-on experience in clinical, translational/lab-based, qualitative, and health services research.

David Brogan, MD. MSc and Christopher Dy, MD, MPH, FACS are pleased to invite interested individuals to submit an application for the Peripheral Nerve Research Scholar Program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Drs. Brogan and Dy lead a collaborative multidisciplinary team centered on improving delivery of care and outcomes for patients with peripheral nerve injuries. Their research is directly relevant to patients, clinicians, scientists, and policy-makers. The lab has two components: (1) Epidemiological, economic, and clinical analysis of brachial plexus injuries and (2) Translational lab-based research focused on imaging of injured nerves and improvement of nerve regeneration. The scholar will have longitudinal projects to design and complete during the program, but will also be asked to contribute to ongoing/existing research projects and review articles in order to maximize productivity. The laboratory has active funding from 3 NIH grants, as well as current/prior funding from OREF, ASSH, and other sources.

Eligibility:
• Medical students between 2nd and 3rd years
• Medical students between 3rd and 4th years
• We can unfortunately not accommodate anyone on a visa

Stipend and Benefits
The recipient of this award will receive an annual living stipend of $26,660.00/$2,221.67 per month. No additional benefits are provided.

Goals and Responsibilities
There are several key educational goals and responsibilities for this Scholar Program:
 • Gain hands-on experience with laboratory-based science, including experimental design, animal surgery, histology preparation/analysis, and presentation/dissemination of results.
• Gain knowledge in clinical, qualitative, and health services research methodology, including study design, protocol development, participant recruitment and enrollment, data collection, and statistical analysis.
• Gain experience with scientific writing, abstract and manuscript preparation and submission, poster and podium presentations, and grant writing.

Specific characteristics we are looking for:
• Individuals interested in a career in orthopaedic surgery or peripheral nerve surgery, who are naturally inquisitive, work well in teams, receptive to coaching, and able to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
