Some programs state how 1 or 2 residents from the pool accepted will be required to do 1-2 years of research. It doesn't sound optional, but as if they will select the residents if no one volunteers. Anyone have any insight to this? Do they ask during the interview if one would be interested, or do you just get suprised in June/July of your intern year?

many places will ask you during the interview if you are interested in appying outside the match for their position. be prepared to answer this question. there are a few programs that will choose a resident for a research year if no one volunteers.
