A lot of places that I contacted for away electives told me that they wouldn't start looking at applications from students not from their own school until late May. Should I send in my app in before that anyway? I keep hearing from residents that spots fill up quickly. If I waited til late May, June like some schools have been telling me, am I gonna be left in the cold? Any tips as to how to get your name in for an away elective? Anything I can say to the secretaries to get my name to the top of the first come first serve pile?

ALso, is there any one site that lists applications for away electives or possible programs? I've searched the "So you want to be a surgeon" site from the ACS thus far. And I've just been going to the websites of specific schools and calling the registrar's office or the dept office...is that the only way to go or are there other resources? Thanks.
The process is certainly a pain. Some places won't give you applications until later in the year, like May/June, or even as late as August. I told them it took 8 weeks for applications to get approved on my end at my school before they would even send them back to the programs. While a bit of a white lie, it seemed to work and got the ball rolling sooner; every place I told this to sent me an application.

Regarding getting a spot, I didn't get the impression it was very competative, even at bigger name places because they can take so many students. However my impression is probably biased because I got everything in early and didn't get turned down anywhere. I would recommend sending in your apps a couple of weeks before their earliest date, unless of course they say they'll throw them out if they get it early. Some will approve you ahead of time, others will just hang onto it until the first date, in which case you'll be the first application they have, and thus you'll get approved. A good rule of thumb- there is very little in life you get penalized for being ahead of time.

There is no one source for away applications, each department has there own. What you're doing is the best thing possible to get the apps.

I would give the programs/medical schools you are interesting in rotating at a telephone call. I submitted my away applications in February (to the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan) and was able to lock in the rotations I wanted. If they will allow you to submit your application early, great. If not, I suupose there's no other choice but to wait.
