I've been lucky enough to receive 2 interviews from Ohio programs. Due to the dates, I'll be spending about a week in Ohio to do it all in one trip. During that week, 3 nearby programs are also interviewing. I know Ohio state will be sending out interviews on Nov 9th, so I'm hoping to hold off booking my ticket until then just in case I get an interview and they offer me the 12/14 date. I was just wondering if its appropriate to email the other programs to say I'll be in the area and whether? If it is appropriate, when is an OK time? Its so early and I'm stunned to have any interviews at all by now but the fewer flights across country the better...

Thoughts?

My class was told by one of our deans who is well associated with the process that it would be ok to do this. You can write something along the lines of "I'm interested in your program and will be in the area, if you are considering me for an interview..blah blah"

Any idea on WHEN to send this email? Before or after the school has already sent out the initial wave of interviews? Have heard conflicting things...

You just take what you get in ortho it's not like medicine or peds where you can contact programs and coordinate your trips. Whenever you get offered you go and if it means flying back and forth across the country then so be it. Yes it sucks, but it's so competitive these days that's how it works. Among my friends, I never heard of someone contacting a program that they hadn't gotten an invite from saying "hey I'm going to be in town" and getting an interview. Even when some of us already had interviews with programs if we tried to reschedule to one of their other dates that was more convenient for us it was almost impossible to even get that done.
