I did a rotation at Harbor-UCLA over the summer, and this issue was being talked about a lot. Most of the residents that I spoke with told me that this threat of closure occurs every 4-5 years around Harbor, and they have always been bailed out by city, state, or federal gov't funds. When I spoke to one resident he told me that if property taxes were raised by only $42 a year for the residents of the area, the hospital would be bailed out. He felt like this was not a big increase for the people and thus thought that the issue would be taken care of.
In general the residents all seemed pretty confident that there was no real threat to their program. They felt assured that because it is the main Level I Trauma center serving that specific part of LA, that it was too valuable to the community to lose. I did not, however, get a real solid answer as to what would happen if it did close.
So, this was what I was told in August. I don't know how much the situtation has changed (if any) over the last couple of months. I will see if I can find any other more updated info, and please post any other info that anyone else has as I also liked this program and am definitely interested in figuring out it's status.
