The Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University invites medical students between third and fourth year (gap year), graduated medical students, and undergraduate/graduate students to apply for a paid clinical research fellowship, beginning May/June 2024.

The research fellow works under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Green and Dr. Scott Paxton and serves as the point person for the clinical research activities of the Division.

In addition, the research fellow works with other attending surgeons in the Division, other clinical research coordinators within the Orthopaedic Department, the Department statistician, the Investigational Review Board, the clinical shoulder and elbow fellow, and Brown orthopaedic surgery residents and medical students. The research interests focus on outcome evaluation and assessment of conditions of the shoulder and elbow.

There is also ample opportunity to gain exposure to clinical orthopaedic surgery in the office clinic and operating room. This position can be tailored to suit the goals of the individual. A one or two (preferred) year commitment is expected. Exceptional interpersonal skills and writing ability are necessary.  Experience with statistics and coding is highly preferred. This is a full-time paid position.

Brown University is located in Providence, Rhode Island, which is a vibrant, small city on the coast of New England and an extremely comfortable and enjoyable place to live.

Research Duties:
  • Prepare manuscripts, textbook chapters, posters, presentations, and educational videos.
  • Organize research meetings, seminars, journal clubs, symposia, and professional society meetings.
  • Provide research study education to participants as part of study protocols (includes calling patients.
  • Develop research studies and designs.
  • Compose/Submit research protocols, IRB documents, and proposals.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze clinical data (R, Stata, SPSS, Excel, RedCap, etc.).

Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint, is required.
