Beginning in 2012, the UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery established a year-long orthopaedic research fellowship to provide medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery with a comprehensive musculoskeletal experience. The program is designed for medical students between their third and fourth year or unmatched following completion of their fourth year and is a blend of research (70%) and clinical (30%) experiences.

Fellows will work with multiple faculty members and interact with residents. Participation in all educational opportunities within the department, including Grand Rounds, weekly faculty lectures to residents, journal clubs, is encouraged.

Beyond allowing students to build their CV with publications and presentations, the primary goals of the program are:
•    To provide students with broad exposure to orthopaedics
•    To build a solid knowledge foundation prior to residency
•    To learn how to conduct clinical research
•    To build strategic relationships within the profession.

The current stipend is $25,000 divided over 12 months. Applications are being accepted for up to eight positions.

For more information, please contact Dr. Ashish Shah ([email protected]). US MD & DO applicants are preferred.

Details about the program and the application can be found at:
