How important are the dinner/social events associated with the interviews?

My 2 cents on a couple. UCLA's is at the Chairman's house the night before and the email says it is "important." So enough said.

I have heard for NYU/HJD (from several of their residents) that it is very important and "they know" if you are not there because there are name tags to claim when you show up.

How about other programs?

Any info regarding the importance of Pitt's? I am inteviewing at Pitt on 12/9 and the dinner/social event is that evening from 6-9pm. The last flight out of Pitt to my home is 9:05pm. So I would have to pay for another night in a hotel there in order to attend, which I can do if it is important.

wouldn't worry too much about the Pitt social event. It's one night for ALL the interviewees....the ones interviewing with you, and the ones interviewing the next day. Approx. 100 interviewees.....so if you already interviewed and met some of the residents, i wouldn't go out of my way to stay. Of all the ones i went to last year, this was by far the largest (meaning, no one will notice if you aren't there). Besides, i'm not even sure the interview really matters....talk to someone you know that interviewed there.

having been through all this last year, i can say that i didn't attend any of the "social" events the night before or the night of the interview.....coordinating your travel schedule is going to be hard enough....there was one point where i had three interviews in three days in three different states......no way u could make it to the dinners......a ton of programs offer these gatherings but if u can't make it, u can't make it....it shouldn't have any effect on your interview or their decision...if it does, then that is messed up......good luck and don't sweat it........

I agree that the dinners shouldn't have anything to do with your rank at a particular program. However, it could have an effect on how YOU rank THEM. I plan to go to as many as possible just to get an idea of the residents and possible classmates.

5 years is a long time to spend in a new city, and an even longer time with the wrong people around you.
