Dr. Uma Srikumaran invites medical students to apply for the Shoulder and Sports Medicine Research Fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for the 2025-2026 academic year. (Office location: 10700 Charter Drive, Columbia, MD 21044)

This paid ($37,000+) research fellowship has a flexible start date of May to August. Fellows can expect to produce a minimum of 10-15 manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and podium presentations. Research fellows will also be provided with a rich and well-rounded experience that we hope will have a long-lasting impact on their careers. During the year, fellows will work closely with Dr. Srikumaran, JHU residents and fellows, and other members of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Students must be actively enrolled in a US Medical School.

Dr. Uma Srikumaran is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins University Clinical Shoulder Fellowship, and Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University has weekly educational activities that you are welcome to take part in. These include grand rounds, shoulder research/clinical meetings, and journal club. Finally, fellows have the opportunity to attend clinics, and surgery, and work directly with Dr. Srikumaran.

Research fellow responsibilities include:
  • Designing Research Hypotheses and Conducting Literature Reviews
  • Preparing and maintaining IRBs
  • Collecting Clinical Data and Performing Statistical Analyses
  • Writing and Submitting Manuscripts
  • Writing and Submitting Research Grants
  • Gaining Clinical Experience: Assist in clinical settings by scribing during patient clinics, enrolling patients into prospective clinical trials, following up with actively enrolled patients, and scrubbing into the OR
  • Managing Various Aspects of Clinical Trials

Applicants are selected based on previous research experience, interpersonal and organizational skills, and a virtual interview. Research fellows typically begin soon after finishing MS2 or MS3 year and are expected to work for one calendar year before returning to medical school and applying to residency.

Application materials: (Combined into one PDF with file titled as last name and your current class graduation year - for example, Mousavi2026.pdf)
• Brief cover letter (detailing your background, previous research, interests, and goals)
• CV
