The Montefiore Einstein Pediatric Orthopedic Research Fellowship offers a unique experience for highly motivated medical students seeking a career in orthopedic surgery. This one-year, full-time position is based in the Division of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore Einstein and the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, a leading institution in pediatric orthopedic care and research. Fellows are integral members of the research team, contributing to groundbreaking studies while gaining exposure to clinical and surgical environments.

Program Highlights
  • Research:  Fellows collaborate on multiple prospective and retrospective clinical research projects addressing key topics in pediatric orthopaedics, including sports medicine, spine deformity, hip disorders, and patient-reported outcomes. The fellow will gain hands-on experience in study design, clinical and survey data collection, and database management, including identifying specific variables for abstraction from electronic health records, coordinating survey distribution and follow-up through Epic and REDCap, and ensuring data accuracy and completeness. Fellows will also assist with data analysis and high-quality manuscript preparation, under the guidance of Principal Investigators (PIs), biostatisticians, and experienced research staff. With over 20 ongoing studies and opportunities for multicenter collaboration, this role offers comprehensive exposure to the full research continuum.
  • Clinical Experience: Fellows gain clinical exposure in outpatient clinics, where they are provided the opportunity to interview patients and administer patient-reported outcome surveys. Opportunities to observe in the operating room are available, providing insight into surgical techniques and decision-making to ensure adequate preparation for away rotations.
  • Mentorship: As a research fellow, you experience close mentorship from pediatric orthopedic surgeons who provide guidance for research projects and career advising. The fellow will work directly under the mentorship of Leila Alvandi, PhD, Eric D. Fornari, M.D., and other members of the Pediatric Orthopedic Division.
