Position: Research Coordinator
Duration: 1 year
Salaried: A monthly stipend is provided
Where: Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center, Spine Service. Chicago, IL
Who: Under the direction of Dr. Kern Singh, Attending Spine Surgeon and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center
When: Beginning Approximately May-June 2014

Dr. Singh is seeking an ambitious 3rd or 4th year medical student who is interested in a year long clinical research fellowship. Duties of the research coordinator will include:
-Coordination of all research projects
- Statistical analysis of data
- Understanding and learning cost-analyses
- Helping to co-author and edit spine surgery textbooks
- Submission of protocols to the IRB
- Submission of Manuscripts to journals ( examples include Spine, The Spine Journal, JBJS, JAAOS and Orthopaedics)
- Drafting and assisting in the writing of Book chapters and Textbooks

Specific Prerequisites and Characteristics of the coordinator should include:
- Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
- Proven interest in research
- MUST be extremely organized
- MUST be detail oriented
- MUST be able to self manage
- Familiarity with SPSS or other statistics software
- Strong academic record

Benefits of the position:
- The fellow should expect to have 10-20 publications by the end of the research year
-The fellow should expect 40+ abstract acceptances at major spine societies
-Fellow will have the ability to be 1st author on all papers that he/she significantly contributes to
-This will undoubtedly bolster and enhance competitiveness for a position in an orthopaedic surgery residency
- The ability to collaborate with Spine Surgical Fellows, orthopaedic residents, and other Spine attendings
- Opportunities to observe surgical procedures (project permitting)
- Ample opportunities to attend Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Spine Conferences, Journal Clubs, and Cadaver Labs
- Opportunities to present research at Orthopaedic/Spine Conferences
- Additionally, Dr. Singh is on the residency selection committee and can offer insight into the application process, letters of recommendation and strengthening the applicants candidacy.
- Dr. Singh expects all applicants to be able to match into Orthopedic Surgery and will help the candidate during the match process.
