Position: PAID Research Associate (1-Year, Renewable)
Location: Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City
*Preferred Start Date: May 2025 (Highly desirable but not required).

The Research Associate (RA) plays a critical role in the Orthopedic Hand & Upper Extremity Research Department, contributing to research management, scientific studies, manuscript preparation, authorship, and quality assurance. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in both clinical and surgical settings, including shadowing orthopedic attendings. The RA will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Robert N. Hotchkiss, gaining invaluable experience in orthopedic research and clinical practice.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Patient Enrollment & Research Coordination
  • Conduct the informed consent process and oversee patient enrollment (requires appropriate training and certification in human research subjects).
  • Serve as a resource for patients enrolled in clinical studies, acting as a liaison between physicians and study participants.
  • Lead efforts to meet patient enrollment targets for independent research studies.
Data Collection & Compliance
  • Manage and collect clinical data directly from patients, including study measurements and adherence to research protocols.
  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry, verifying transcription from paper case report forms (CRFs) to electronic formats.
  • Oversee and execute Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, ensuring compliance and preventing lapses in study approvals.
  • Collaborate closely with HSS internal monitors for regulatory and compliance activities.
Research & Clinical Involvement
  • Participate in clinical, bench, and cadaveric research studies, with opportunities for authorship in scientific publications and present novel research at national and international conferences..
  • Collect intraoperative data and conduct follow-up assessments in the clinic.
  • Gain exposure to orthopedic clinical care through shadowing opportunities in both the office and operating room.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Strong motivation for a career in orthopedic surgery.
  • Demonstrated interest in clinical research.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of independent work.
  • Experience with REDCap, REDCap Cloud, and other clinical research platforms is preferred (training available).
  • Knowledge of research methodology, regulatory compliance, IRB processes, and research accounting is a plus.
  • Comfortable working in operating room and outpatient settings, interacting with patients, physicians, nurses, and therapists.
Minimum Requirements:
Education/Training: Open to medical students and medical graduates.
