With the way my schedule is shaping up, it looks as if I will have ten available weeks in which to rotate at other ortho programs, if anyone is willing to offer any advice on whether to

1) Do one six week rotation and one four week rotation

2) Do two three week rotations and one four week rotation

3) or do programs only allow rotations in four week increments?

Thank you in advance.

Ortho05,

I was in your exact predicament last year and this was my approach. I would not recommend plan 1, simply because personally I feel, there is nothing you can accomplish in 6 weeks that you can't in 4 weeks except annoy people and be remembered as that guy that was here for 6 weeks. Plan 2 will require a huge commitment on your part to find out which if any programs offer 3 week rotations and you will also need a tight travel plan depending on where your rotations are to get around on those in between weekends. I can see some good things from rotating at 3 places in terms of improving your interview status, but you have to consider how diligent you will need to be to accomplish all of the aforementioned planning.

Now, as for what I did. I am assuming you are planning a rotation at your home school either before or after this 10 week block. I did my home ortho rotation first then I took 1 week off to travel (and relax), did a 4 week away rotation, took another week off, did a 4 week away and came back. I had to travel across the US for that 1st away. During those weeks off I was putting together my application, getting letters of rec. in order which sucks, and decompressing from the previous rotations. Talk to me next week, but looking back I wouldn't have done it any other way.
Hope this helps.

Ortho 05,

I wasn't quite in your exact situation, but I did do two away rotations. I was getting a little burned out by the end of my second away (plus a home program ortho AI) and I'm sure some people may of noticed that I was a little sluggish here and there. So, be good to yourself and also smart and consider doing two solid 4 week rotations with a one week break between each one for travel, R&R and you'll be trying to get your application together at that time. I even had to go to an interview (Mayo interviewed early this year) during my October AI which may have been a negative thing since I had to miss a weekend day to do it. Just remember that no one but you (and your dean's office) will have to know that you gave yourself a week off in between. Good luck
