Dr. Volker Musahl is seeking
one (1) ambitious medical student who is interested in pursuing a one-year clinical research fellowship. Dr. Musahl is a Professor and Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Fellowship Director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a world-renowned orthopaedic surgeon and one of the world’s foremost researchers on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He completed his residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA followed by fellowship in sports medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, NY. Dr. Musahl spearheads a large research group of fellows both from the United States and internationally, including Japan, Germany, Italy, and more.
This position provides a unique opportunity for a medical student to pursue extensive research and collaborate with international faculty. Research fellows can expect to work closely with residents, clinical fellows, and attendings on a wide variety of sports-related research in the clinical and laboratory settings. In addition, fellows can expect to observe in the operating room and clinic, attend weekly conferences and educational experiences with residents and clinical fellows, and present accepted research at national and international conferences. This research fellowship provides an opportunity to work with a leader in orthopaedic sports medicine research at one of the world’s foremost institutes for sports medicine research. Alumni from this program have made strong connections and gone on to match at top institutions in the country.
Applicants are expected to be organized, detail-oriented, independent, and motivated for a career in orthopaedic surgery. By the conclusion of the research year, applicants are expected to develop their own study ideas and complete every step of the research process, from developing an idea to final publication. Research fellows with strong Step I/II scores, prior research in orthopedics, and experience with basic statistics and video-editing will be preferentially considered, however these are not strict requirements.
