Dr. Uma Srikumaran invites medical students to apply for a paid orthopaedic surgery research fellowship with a specialized focus on visual media, surgical education, and academic content creation within the Shoulder and Sports Medicine Division at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This position is uniquely designed for applicants who possess a strong background or demonstrated interest in videography, cinematography, post-production, and advanced camera systems, and who wish to integrate these skills into high-impact orthopaedic research and education.
Fellowship Overview
This is a paid research fellowship ($47,000+) with a flexible start date between May and August. Fellows can expect to produce a minimum of 10–15 scholarly products, including manuscripts, abstracts, posters, podium presentations, and research-driven educational media. The fellowship offers a comprehensive academic experience with close mentorship and hands-on involvement in both research and clinical environments. Fellows will work directly with Dr. Srikumaran, Johns Hopkins residents and fellows, and other members of the Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Applicants must be actively enrolled in a U.S. medical school.
About the Mentor
Dr. Uma Srikumaran is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Shoulder Fellowship, inaugural holder of the Congdon Family Professorship, and Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service.
Unique Visual Media & Technical Focus
In addition to traditional orthopaedic research responsibilities, the fellow will play a central role in capturing, producing, and refining high-quality visual content for surgical education and academic dissemination.
Applicants with experience in the following areas are strongly encouraged:
- Post-Production & Editing
- Color management, log workflows, and delivery optimization
- Camera Systems & Production
- Sony mirrorless and cinema cameras (FX-series, α-series, or similar)
- Lenses, codecs, exposure workflows, and audio fundamentals
- Cinema cranes, jibs, gimbals, or advanced camera rigs
- Deep understanding of electronic camera equipment
- Troubleshooting and workflow optimization
- Comfort working in OR, clinic, and simulation settings
- A portfolio or examples of prior work are encouraged but not required.
Educational & Clinical Opportunities
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins offers weekly educational activities, including:
- Shoulder research and clinical conferences
- Fellows will also have opportunities to function as an ambulatory scribe in clinic, observe surgery, and work directly with Dr. Srikumaran in both research and clinical environments.
Research Fellow Responsibilities
- Designing research hypotheses and conducting literature reviews
- Preparing and maintaining IRB submissions
- Collecting clinical data and performing statistical analyses
- Writing and submitting manuscripts and abstracts
- Writing and submitting research grants
- Managing various aspects of clinical trials
- Gaining clinical experience, including:
- Enrolling and following patients in prospective studies
- Observing in the operating room
- Developing visual and educational media to support research, teaching, and academic dissemination

Research fellows typically begin after completing MS2 or MS3 and are expected to commit to one full calendar year before returning to medical school and applying to residency.
