Orthopaedic Musculoskeletal Oncology Service Research Scholars Program  Position Title: Clinical Research Scholar# of Positions: 1Duration: 2026-2027 academic yearAffiliated Institution: Washington University School of MedicineThe Orthopaedic Musculoskeletal Oncology Service Research Scholars Program is being offered by the Department of Orthopaedics at Washington University School of Medicine, within the clinical division of the Orthopaedic Musculoskeletal Oncology Service .  This program is designed to provide a one-year mentored experience centered on research involving care and outcomes related to orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncology patients.  The selected scholar will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of clinical, qualitative and outcomes research.The orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncology service faculty including Drs Regis O’Keefe, Ian English, and David Clever invite those interested to submit an application for consideration of the position. The primary aim of the orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncology research scholar position is to gain experience and hone skills in clinical research.  This will include the following roles and responsibilities: research question formulation, study design, IRB preparation/submission/compliance, data collection, patient enrollment, database design and maintenance, statistical analysis and collaboration with statistician as needed, manuscript preparation, abstract and manuscript submission and revision.  Scholars will be included as authors on manuscripts prepared commensurate with effort and participation including first author as appropriate.  The Musculoskeletal Oncology Service is looking for a highly motivated individual to make the most of their time to hone their skills and allow for career advancement.  The position is financially supported by the division. EligibilityGraduates of accredited colleges and universities (Gap year)Medical students between 1st and 4th yearsMedical school graduatesVisa support is not available for this program. StipendThe recipient of this award will receive an annual living stipend of $26,660.00/$2,221.67 monthly. No additional benefits are provided. Responsibilitieso   Under the guidance of faculty, the Research Scholar will lead, and participate, on clinical research projects.o   In-person, full-time position within the Department of Orthopaedics, Washington University School of Medicineo   Collaborate with Research Coordinators, Orthopaedic Fellows and Residents, Medical and Undergraduate students, Biostatisticians, staff and facultyo   Develop and manage research databaseso   Attend monthly divisional research meetingso   Participate in development of study hypothesis and design, database creation, protocol development, participant recruitment and enrollment, data collection, and statistical analysis.o   Develop and write hypothesis-driven scientific documents (scientific meeting abstracts, manuscripts and grants) Specific characteristics we are looking for:o   Individuals interested in a career in orthopaedic surgery, who are naturally inquisitive, work well in teams, self-directed, receptive to coaching, and able to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.o   Interest in orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncologyo   Experience in data management programs (e.g., Excel, Redcap, SPSS, R)o   Experience in manuscript preparationo   Motivated individual able to make the most of a 1-year experience and be as productive as possible to allow for further career advancement Goals and Benefits of the positiono   Opportunities to develop and complete a series of longitudinal research projects that can lead to presentation of research at national research meetings and publications.o   Opportunities to contribute to existing/ongoing research projects, which will include authorshipo   Gain experience in clinical medicine through outpatient clinics and inpatient operating rooms.o   Networking in the field of orthopaedics, specifically orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncologyo   Expand and enhance knowledge of orthopaedics, and medicine, by attending CME educational conferences from the Department of Orthopaedicso   Gain knowledge in clinical, qualitative, and outcomes research methodology, including study design, database creation, protocol development, participant recruitment, and enrollment, data collection, and statistical analysis.o   Develop skill of hypothesis-driven scientific writing, abstract and manuscript preparation, scientific meeting submissions of podium and e-poster presentations, and grant writing.o   Understand the process of clinical research from idea conception through publication. How to applyThe timeframe to apply is 1/1/2026 to 4/31/2026.
