SLUPod, I'm a PGY-1 Ortho at SLU now so if you have any questions that I might can answer you can email me. The program is undergoing major changes right now as Dr. Moed, the new chair, just arrived. We had a big meeting yesterday with him and we have some very exciting new things on the horizon. As you probably know we have expanded to six years with an extra year between clinical pgy-1 and pgy-2. That year will be about half research and half clinical with 1.5 days per week spent in clinic and OR with one night per week taking call. They apparently have secured funding to do some real research here, which has not been something traditionally done at SLU. The plan is to have much less in house call with additional coverage from the research year guys and we plan to have some rotators from another program get their trauma experience here which will help cover call as well. There are at least 3 more trauma attendings coming, one additional spine attending, and one full time sports attending all in the next six months. The only real weakness left is hand which Dr. Moed is actively trying to recruit. Overall we are all pretty excited about the direction our program is moving.
As far as that guy who didn't get ranked, I don't know the whole story but I heard it was a personality conflict. In the past Dr. Burdge pretty much picked the incoming class, I have no idea how Dr. Moed will change the selection process.
