question for the athletes: for those of you who maintained a steady, focused preparatory and competitive routine in a sport prior to or during med school, how has residency changed it? i dont mean lifting weights a couple times per week or playing pick-up games at the gym, i mean serious athletic endeavors and training. has it been possible to keep active in competition at a higher level or do the 80+ hours/wk wear you down too much? i am a 3rd year and sports is basically the only thing that i truly admire, hence the interest in ortho. so far med school has put a dent into my prior athletic ways, and i would like to limit that influence as much as possible during residency. would i be essentially giving it up by pursuing ortho? thanks very much.

If you had difficulty participating at the level you wish during medical school, you would be mistaken in thinking that residency would allow more time for training (or any other activities). You will have much, much less free time than you did in medical school. That being said, you have to make time for what's important to you.

Dude, 80 hours a week of any residency sucks, and that's if you're lucky and your program complies. And of course it wears you out. Even those "lifting weights a couple of times per week or playing pick-up games" are very hard sometimes to do. Life, especially as an intern is much more tiring and exhausting than I ever imagined it would be, and my year is honestly not too terribly bad. I would definitely say that any residency is the same, especially 1st year. I have friends in every field all of whom have had little time to do a lot of extracurricular stuff and are all tired. I played in a mens' soccer league in med school, and now, if I were still at my home school I would try, but honestly would probably rather sleep in on Saturday morning if I had it off. Sorry to sound so jaded, but I am an intern.
