Hey guys,

Anyone who's rotated at BU have an insights on the program? All of the old posts make it sound like it does (or did) suck, but now Dr. Einhorn is making improvements.

Anyone? Anyone?

Doc,

i rotated there this past august on the trauma service. being originally from boston, i am pretty biased but i had an outstanding time. great attendings and a fantastic bunch of residents. good learning environment with intense socratic-type x-ray/ER conference every AM moderated by dr. tornetta, res. director and one of the nation's foremost trauma experts. great guy even with his prominence b/c he's young, about 42 or so.

didn't see much of other services, but BU is the home of sports medicine since the godfather of sports med. is Dr. Leach who is chair emeritus and still lectures there about 2-4x month. joint service is einhorn's and he is another high quality person, very personable and has tremendous goals for the program in terms of basic science research if that's your thing.

they just got a new spine guy, Dr. Chris Buono from NY. another young guy (i hear not even 40 yet) who comes in with outstanding credentialsm, though i am not privvy to them off hand.

hand is good too; peds is in a little flux right now but goals are set to be met very soon according to the residents.

the residents themselves are generally pleased with the program. patient population allows for a good deal of actual OR experience beginning as early as your pgy-2 year but depends on which service you are on. autonomy is the name of the game right from your first day as an ortho resident, e.g. on trauma, the pgy-2 is completely responsible for covering the ER from 5a-sign out and is expected to be able to manage almost everything on his/her own (assessment, plan, films, when to call chief for OR decision, etc.). only complaint is hours. trauma service is one of the busiest in the country since it services the entire SE part of massachusetts, the most populous part of the state. tons of tranfers and referrals make your trauma days run from 5a-7:30p ON A GOOD DAY. other services aren't nearly as tough, obviously, but can still keep you in house until 6 or later.

all in all, i felt that this was a solid program with no where to go but up, and that's right where einhorn has it going.

hope this helps

I was pretty bummed too...I won't get too many more opportunities to visit Boston and get some good Chowda....hehe (unless I hear good news from Harvard but doesn't seem likely the way things have gone the past week ).

great trauma experience/teaching under the guidance of dr. tornetta. the program is definitely rising under the leadership of dr. einhorn, but not no sure how strong the sports/hand/peds services are though. residents definitely work very hard
