Orthopedic Surgery Info for Interns
For the past few years, the AOA has pilot tested an Orthopedic Surgery Match. The Executive Committee of the AOA Council on Postdoctoral Training has reviewed this pilot program and has decided not to continue to fund the Orthopedic Surgery Match. There will be no Orthopedic Surgery Match program for the 2002-03 training year.
Candidates for next year’s orthopedic surgery programs (individuals who are currently interns) must be selected by using the process that was in place prior to the pilot Orthopedic Surgery Match. Interns interested in orthopedic surgery programs must now directly contact the hospitals in which they have an interest and request an application for residency positions in orthopedic surgery.
Candidates who wish to enter an orthopedic surgery program in the 2003-04 training year may apply in their internship year or, if it is available, utilize the internship and residency linking program and apply through the AOA Internship Match.
The Executive Committee of the Council on Postdoctoral Training encourages orthopedic surgery program directors to utilize the new method of linking internship and residency positions in the AOA Match as a method to select candidates for your program. Candidates in the 2002 Match would enter your orthopedic surgery program in the 2003-04 training year. Students linked into a combined internship/orthopedic surgery program through the Match are expected to be given a 2nd year contract if they have satisfactorily completed the internship year. The exceptions to this commitment of a 2nd year contract are if the individual did not satisfactorily complete the internship year due to academic problems or if the intern and program director sign a mutual release.
