hey guys, i was hoping some of you wise individuals can help a dumbass 3rd yr like myself. I am trying to plan my 4th yr schedule, and i was originally under the impression that you should try to do your home and away rotations in the first 3-4 blocks, in order get ortho LRs in on time. But 4th yrs at my school that have already matched, and the dean of students here, have been recommending that in the first three 3 blocks, I should do a home ortho rotation, and then a rotation in general surg, surg icu, etc... and get LRs from these rotations. They said i shouldn't do away rotations until blocks 4-6 ( months of oct-dec), and that i should not get LRs from these away rotations, but just try to get an interview and increase my chances for matching there. What are your thoughts...i thought that most people get all 3-4 LRs from just orthopods - is this not the case, is only 1-2 LR from othopods enough? I really have no idea when to plan my aways, i'd appreciate some advice from the guys in the know-how. Thanks
lucas

Recommendations:
1. Tell your Dean that he is a dumb-ass and he should keep his piehole shut until he learns how the process works for ortho...seriously.
2. Have your ortho rotations done by october (at the latest), esp. if you need LOR's from them.
3. Get all of your LOR's from these ortho rotations and only these ortho rotations. Programs don't want letters from ass surgeons or boob surgeons. They want letters from there own kind. You should have all of these LOR's either turned in, or at least in the process by the end of Sept.
4. Unless your home program is at the top of your list, doing it early may help, just to get some experience, etc. (or you could do it late and tell your program to pound sand anyway.)

I'm being a smartass, but the info is sincere. Hope this helps. ):)

Agree with everything other than the LOR part. Many will disagree with me, but I went with LORs from people that really knew me, rather than any orthopod I could get to agree to write it. I had one ortho letter, one peds letter, and one gen surg letter and I ended up matching at my No. 1 choice. If you can get to know three pods really well and are convinced that they will write you great letters, by all means, get letters from only pods. Otherwise, I say go with the three, or four, attendings that you think will write you the best letters.
