St. Joseph's University Medical Center (SJUMC) is now accepting applications for 2024-2025 Orthopaedic Surgery Research Fellowship Position: Research Fellow
Positions: 1 gap year applicant (student between M3/M4 highly interested in applying for orthopaedic surgery residency)
Duration: 1 year
Where: St. Joseph's University Medical Center, Paterson, NJ
When: May/June 2024 to June 2025
Salary: as per hospital, benefits included

The Sports Medicine and Spine Divisions of the Orthopaedics Department at the St. Joseph’s University Medical Center (SJUMC) in Paterson, New Jersey invite US medical school MS3 students to apply to the 1 year salaried, gap year clinical research fellowship. We are seeking ambitious, motivated, self-directed and highly organized applicants who wish to expand their knowledge of Orthopaedic Surgery and increase the competitiveness of their residency application. To date, 100% of our past research fellows have matched into an orthopaedic surgery residency program. 

As a research fellow, you will work under the direction of Dr. Arash Emami, Department Chairman, and Dr. Anthony Scillia, Residency Program Director, for SJUMC. The research fellow will work closely with the SJUMC residents, faculty, and other institutions on ongoing research projects and database maintenance. Additionally, the research fellow works with, teaches, and mentors premed students and medical students. The research fellow also attends weekly lectures, ground rounds, and educational activities including cadaver lab, conferences, and journal clubs. 

The research fellow will be responsible for:
- Coordinating and managing ongoing research projects
- Collaborating with affiliated institutions
- Maintaining the surgical database
- Drafting, submitting, updating protocols, and presenting to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Data collection
- Statistical analysis of data
- Abstract, poster and manuscript preparation, submission and presentation 
- Book chapter preparation
- Attending resident education
- Grant writing
- Mentoring premed and medical students 

Qualified candidates will possess the following:
- A strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
- An evident interest in research
- A strong academic record
- Previous research experience (experience with statistical analysis is encouraged)
- The ability to work independently
- Incredible organizational skills and detail-oriented
- Strong communication skills and works well with others
