This kind of goes along with the other thread on options for the unmatched. My question is,

1. Are there ortho residency positions available outside the US for us US medical graduates?
2. If so, is there some database for these positions, info on the application process, etc?
3. Would we be able to come back and practice here as pods if we pass the OITE?

I didn't find any of this info on old threads, so all info is appreciated.

To practice medicine in the US, you must complete a residency in the US. However, you do not need to go to a US medical school.

The OITE is just a test to compare yourself to your peers. It has nothing to do with board certification. That is through ABOS.

nope - to practice medicine in the US you only need a full medical license. the requirements vary by state, but most require 1 or 2 years of post-graduate training in the US in an accredited program.

so you could do your residency outside the US, then come back and do a fellowship, apply for a license and practice. at many teaching hospitals there are foreigners on staff that did it this way.

the only downside is that you can only take the ortho boards (not USMLE or OITE) after a full US residency. you can practice without boards, but it might be more difficult to find a job, as more and more HMOs require board certification in order to be paid.

McGill University in Montreal takes one student American student from the U.S. match every year. While it is in Canada, the program is considered to be a "U.S" program in terms of all board certifications, etc., so there's no need to take any additional exams or worry about practicing in the U.S. after residency. Plus it's a great, resident-friendly program and Montreal is a blast.
