so this got brought up between a friend/fellow applicant and me the other night while we were sitting around in our overpriced hotel room .... she has an interview at a program that sent out the obligatory (we were put on probation for XYZ but are confident that will be reversed in the next review) and i got an interview at a completely different program that is also under probation.

i'm sitting on the problem of scheduling interviews with tight date restrictions. what are you folks' thoughts on interviewing/considering programs that are "on probation," even if it is for something like not enough didactics and they state they're actively improving that. would you interview there? turn it down regardless? schedule elsewhere even if at a less desireable program for your interests?

also in consideration for me is one of these programs is in a geographical area that i'm very interested in.

thoughts?

I will rank the program first without that factored in and then move them down based on what the situation is currently.

The key question is "why is the program on probation?"

A program with a new Chairman is automatically on probation. That's not a cause for concern (usually). That would be the situation here at Mount Sinai in New York.

A program that sees a massive exodus of Attendings is another story altogether.

So my advice is to call the Chief Resident or Program Director to find out the cause of the probation.

Hope this helps!
