i have thought ortho for a while now but as the day gets closer to deciding on aways and finalizing my choices i am getting cold feet about how much i am sacrificing in other areas of my life. To the people already in residency and even better, to those done with training and working in private practice or academics, how does your day run in terms of time and do you honestly have a life of family, hobbies, travel etc? I love ortho and can't honestly see myself as happy doing something else but perhaps i don't have to love my job if it allows me to enjoy my life. I know there are a lot of people who have had this internal debate. I've done the talking and the investigating and the listening and i'm still torn. any thoughts about day-in/day-out life and ortho?

Use the search function and search on username OrthoDoc. There's a post of his around where he mentions his lifestyle approx. 3 years after he completed his residency.

Search on 'lifestyle' too.

Speaking of lifestyle, I just got back from an awesome fishing trip in Ontario, just one week of the ten weeks of vacation I have available to me.

Anyway, here is the link you are looking for:

i definatly agree that it depends a lot on your practice setup and what compensation is like in your area/how much you wanna make. We have a spine guy here that is really gung ho and does a ton of cases (big ones too). He is up over 7 figures for income but he is a single guy and loves his current setup. There is another spine guy here (same specialty for comparison)who works just about the exact opposite schedule and is frequently gone on vacation to one of a jillion places. Are they both happy? YES! My point is you should figure out what you want to work (be realistic) and try to find a practice opportunity that allows it. The more restrictions you place on your particular needs, the trickier it will be to find a match for you. I would estimate (only an estimate) that my attendings here average about 45-55 hours a week. That does not count call, which varies b/t groups (we cover multiple private groups) but unless it is a case that is gonna need the OR they are just at home, not in house. I always look at it this way, I will still have a much better lifestyle than my buddy who went into general slavery, err i meant surgery....
