what up,

I'm doing an elective at Case and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, as far what kind of month it is, what attendings to hang with, etc.

Thanks!

Sawbonz,
This is where I went to med school. Bottom line this is the most well rounded program I've seen. If it had not been for the fact that I spent my undergrad years at CWRU, I would have really fought to stay but eight years in one place is too long. The month is split into two - two week segments. Two weeks are spent at Metro hospital (county hospital and trauma center) on general ortho and trauma. All of the attendings are great and the residents love the place. You WILL work your ass off, so be prepared! Come early, stay late, all go, no quit! The second two weeks are spent at University Hospitals of Cleveland on either the spine or the joint service. I personally thought that my time on the spine service could not be beat. I do not like spine and never want to go into it but.... most of the student advocates at CWRU are spine attendings be SURE to spend time with: Drs. Yoo (Spine), Emery (Spine) , Victoroff (Sports), and Feign (sp?) (foot and Ankle and PROGRAM DIRECTOR).
The great thing about this rotation is there are only four students per month so you don't end up climbing all over each other to gain recognition.
The residents are a great group of people and a good mix of a nerd and jock program (let's say... smart jocks... or if you prefer.. beafy nerds.)
The only downside is that Bone Jock is going to be an intern there and therefore if you are looking to meet any ladies in the greater Cleveland area while on your rotation, believe you me they are spoken for!!!!
):)
Good luck, if I can be of any more assistance please e-mail at [email protected]

About case,
their chairman just stepped down, a couple of attendings have left, and a couple of more are looking to leave. Im sure things will settle down there but it is in a little transition right now.

Dr. Bone Jock here,

Yes, graduation was this past Sunday so it's official now. Wooo-Whoooo (homer simpson voice). Any way. I'm an incoming PGY-1 resident at CWRU. I echo every thing that Wildcat says. Only addition I have is, don't slack. People will know if you do, and they don't take kindly to it. But I'm sure I don't need to tell you that.

As for our Chairman just stepping down: Not happy about it (only because I was told the contrary when I interviewed), but not worried either. When I was at Harvard one of the Big-Wigs made a great statement. "In powerful programs (like Harvard who recently lost a chair, and CWRU), big changes don't make waves, they make ripples." This change will have no bearing on my RESIDENCY TRAINING or where I go afterwards. Dr. Goldberg (the former chairman) will still be around and I haven't caught any wind of a mass faculty exodus. A national search is on, and if anything, bringing another big gun Surgeon into the program may only further strengthen an already very strong program.

If you need any more candid info about the program. Feel free to email me at:

i thought it was just me who heard "i'm not going to leave anytime soon" at the interview!!!! nice to see that i am not going nuts! all you youngins should learn from this one...this whole process is like an election and they will tell you anything to get you on their side!

i agree that, while he will be missed, CWRU will somehow find a way to muddle along!! congrats bonejock on graduation. i don't know about you, but all of my medical knowledge is slipping away....or is it being sipped away??!!

Yeah, info is leaving quickly.

when I opened the envelope on match day, I heard this very loud "flushing" noise in my head. it's a great feeling.

Okay, here's an outsiders perspective.
I spent a month at CWRU (2+2 Metro/Univ) and thought it was a great program, especially the Metrohealth rotation. Patterson (sp?) is perhaps the most amazing ortho trauma surgeon I've seen. He put most trauma teams to shame. Think...MacGyver...I saw him fix a Schatzker 4 with a stick of gum and the top of a tin can.

The Wilber bros. where amazing as well.
After the first 2 weeks at Metro I knew CWRU would be No. 1 on my list...THEN... I went to University Hospitals.
Beautiful place...Mixed review of nurses and scrub techs (or whatever the h$%& that one guy is) Spine attendings were excellent... Sports guy (won't mention any names) errr well..."if you can't say anything nice"... you know the rest.
As far as residents...Good mix? Not really, here's the deal: Older residents/seniors were more "intelligent jock-type". Junior residents were a bit too "nerd heavy" which I felt would reflect the direction of the program.
Overall it's a great high ranking program. I would say it's ideal for many...just not me. I met BoneJock on the interview trail and I'm sure he'll love it, but me, by the end of the 4th week, I was through with CWRU and CLEVELAND.

First off, no hard feelings about what was just said about Cleveland/University hospitals/nerd ratio here at CWRU. I'd probably agree with most of what was said. I must say though, I'm from Cleveland so I love it to death, that sports guy has to grow on you, and well UH is UH - can't defend that

.

Secondly, it was posted earlier that attendings were jumping ship now that Goldberg has stepped down as chair. I wasn't sure about it at the time so I had to go research before I responded. NO ATTENDINGS have jumped ship as of yet, and from what I hear none are planning to. Just wanted to crush that nasty rumor before it snowballed. Goldberg is still going to be here, and if a national search can bring another big gun guy into the program, then I'm all for it.

my question is who the heck is bone jock? How could a kock be at a nerdy program? L, help return CWRU to jock stardom! You need another CWRU med school jock to follow next year! Help save America! Recommend Corod1 for president . . . I mean, tell'em I'm good. Good luck, and I'll see you soon, man.
Go Browns!

Corod1,
We are all trying to figure this one out. Perhaps it is Bench/Step I ratio that the program was looking for. One cannot be too sure. Corod do I (and Bone Jock know you?) Are you a 4th year at CWRU. If you don't care to post on the OSRR e-mail at [email protected]

Peace.

ah, so good to see case students raving about the uh program, although i really think that metro is the best part of it! however, for cleveland programs, i have to grant out that the cleveland clinic is a positively lovely lifestyle competitor!

good luck starting your internships, bonejock, wildcat!

Thanks for the congrats, and yes, metro is the strength of the program. Corod, I know who you are and I'll see you on July 1st since I'm starting on Ortho. The jocks are going to overtake the ortho program!!!! We have to get that b-ball squad together
