Alright guys, here's the dilemma.

I did pretty well on Step I (230's) and I'm taking August off, going away, completing the ERAS, etc. Do I:

A) Take Step II on Aug. 25 as scheduled and have to study over vacation and potentially bomb it, thereby shooting myself in the foot. I know you can hold the scores, but I'm sure programs will still find out, if not flat out ask me.

OR

B) Take Step II in January during interviews and a month of anatomy. It's late and I will have definitely forgotten a LOAD of stuff, but it's late enough that the score won't really matter as long as I pass it. But I'll have to have it on the back burner until then.

What's everyone think?

you will hear arguments on both sides. I was advised to wait as long as possible so as not to do poorly and make my 235 on step 1 look like a fluke. I did wait (until June actually) and it was a pain because I had forgotten a ton. I would tell you to take it in August with caveats:
1. if you got 230's on step 1 that probably is because you are a great student and take tests well. That points to a good step 2 score that will only help your application. If you feel like you were lucky to get your step 1 score, then perhaps this doesn't apply to you. If you feel like your score was representative of your ability/preparation, then I would go for it.
2. most people do better on step 2 than step 1. If you take it now, you are more likely to do well and pad your app.

good luck.

I hear you sawbones. Im in the same position. 240 on step 1 and not looking forward to step II. based on what my classmates have said regarding the seeming difficulty of stepII im going to take in Jan/Feb. although i don't want to look like im trying to hide something or that i don't have confidence to do well. hopefully more people will provide feedback/advice.....

I'm in the same boat. Did very well on Step I and afraid to take step 2 early so I'm taking it later in 2003 (I'm thinking right after match). I know I'll have forgotten a lot by then but atleast the stress will be off. Also, I'll be coming off a few medicine rotations at that point which hopefully will be a good review. Right now I'm focusing on learning otho...

The typical ortho op note:
Bone broken...used power tools...bone fixed.

I feel your pain for sure. I am in a similar boat with my step one, but my advisor told me that more places might start to use step II a little more since they realize they can and that I should go ahead. I took it a couple of weeks ago and now am &*%(*ing my pants waiting for the score to come back. I'll let you guys know if it was good advice.
Overall it was tough but different than step I, not as studyable. Just do lots and lots of practice questions because it is long and beats you down.
good luck
