Texas, Florida and Southeastern Programs

For those of you who are currently rotationg through or training at these different programs, I would like
to hear your opinions on the residencies in this area. I intend to do my residency in this region if at all
possible. Please comment on any area that is important in evaluating various programs. Thanks.

Miami

If you are looking for a great clinical program with tons of operating and a fun atmosphere, Miami is one
place you should check out. The residents are a tight bunch, go out all the time, basically there is a work
hard-play hard philosophy here, kind of like a fraternity. The sun shines all year round, the beaches are
great, the nightlife is similar to Manhattan and cost of living is definitely affordable on a resident's salary.
Overall, it is one of the best places to train and have a great life outside the hospital.

Re: Miami

I definitely have to agree with the earlier comments about Miami. I'm currently doing an away rotation
there and the residents are very tight . . . Dr. Eismont likes it that way and wants to keep it that way.
They do go out a lot and have plenty of time outside of residency to have a life. Their call schedule is also
pretty great, even during the 2nd year. It's mostly q4-q5. The hardest rotation is spine which you do 2
months of during your 2nd and 4th years. Talking to the residents, the minuses are a lack of many
didactic lectures, little research emphasis, and early operative experience and responsibility which can be
a plus minus (you operate early and often, but its usually under the direction of a more senior resident
than an attending (applies to operations during the night and also some during the day).

The pluses are a great call schedule, early and plenty of operative experience, and if you're single . . . the
location, Miami.
