Hey fellow would be orthopods, I just decided to get this questions out of the way since I will have to start my MS III rotations right after I finish step I (As in I take step I last week of May 2003 and start my clinical rotations June 1, 2003 - I am a UMKC 6 year BA/MD student)

What textbooks (including review books and question books for the cores) would you recommend for the following rotations:
- Surgery
- OB/GYN
- Pediatrics
- Psychiatry
- Emergency Medicine
- Family Medicine
- Neurology on Step II (neurology is not a requirement at our school)

AND MOST IMPORTANT:
- orthopedics rotations

I'd say you're probably jumping the gun a little, but I'll give you my opinion.

Surgery-Mont Reid Handbook of Surgery -good concise chapters, descriptions of procedures, and best of all fits in most coat pockets. Secondly, Surgery Recall-its a staple. I know several people who chose the daunting task of much larger (verbose) materials and had difficulty finishing them.

OB/GYN-Blueprints for OB/GYN, that's it.

Pediatrics-Blueprints for Peds, that's it.

Psychiatry- Blueprints OR NMS, both are probably overkill.

ER-No idea (aka didn't read anything), if I had to choose probably Emergency Medicine Secrets.

Family Medicine-First Aid for Step 2

Neurology-(have not taken, nor look forward to) but many of my classmates have used High Yield or Blueprints and found them to be more than sufficient.

Ortho-I like Perry's Handbook of Fx, and Spivak(which I recently learned is no longer in print-not sure if new version is on the way). You can check around this site and which have a good listing of other popular ortho books.

As far as question books go, I don't have the slightest clue. And my favorite piece of advice is to NOT buy any of them except the ortho texts. Either get most of them from your library or buy one or two and trade with classmates. Good luck on Step I.
