The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health invites all interested and qualified individuals to apply for a one- or two-year orthopaedic research fellowship position.This is a salaried position that will begin on April 1, 2022 and is open to all candidates who will be eligible to apply for the Residency Match for 2023 or 2024. This position is open to MD and DO candidates. This fellowship presents an opportunity to work with national and international leaders in the field of orthopaedic surgery, assist with FDA clinical trials of new drugs and devices, collect and analyze data, attend and present your work at regional and national conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Previous fellows have published multiple PubMed-indexed articles and have presented at the annual AAOS meetings during their fellowships. This is an excellent way to improve your CV and increase your chance of matching to an orthopaedic surgery residency. Previous research fellows (allopathic, osteopathic, and IMGs) have successfully entered U.S. orthopaedic surgery residency programs. Although the fellowship has an incredibly high success rate, its historic success is due to the drive and commitment of the applicant. We are looking for someone who is willing to work hard and smart for one or two years. GOALS: Investigate basic science and clinical aspects of orthopaedic surgery as a Clinical Research Coordinator; prepare manuscripts and textbook chapters; participate in research meetings, seminars, journal clubs, symposia, and professional society meetings PREREQUISITE EDUCATIONAL LEVEL OR CREDENTIALS: Current medical students (MS3, MS4) or recent graduates (MD or DO) interested in conducting basic science and clinical research in the field of orthopaedics. Applicants need to make sure any academic program they are currently involved in allows for this one- to two-year fellowship. A foundational background in statistics is preferred but not required.DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: The term of research fellowship will be one or two years. Research fellows will work on research projects, primarily on a self-directed basis, with an emphasis on total joint reconstruction, sports medicine, and orthopaedic spine surgery. Fellows will demonstrate proficiency in the varied aspects of basic science and clinical research, including study design, IRB compliance, informed consent, data collection, statistics and data analysis, oral presentation, and manuscript preparation. The fellows will be responsible for a minimum of one study to be completed for presentation at a local, regional, national, or international research or professional society meeting and/or submission for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
