Didn't rotate at any but got to visit LIJ and SUNY SB for interviews. Both are excellent programs. Neither have ?strong? academics (LIJ stronger than SB, however)? they both seem to be more ?hands on programs.? LIJ: has lots of research funding (a surprise when I went), strong elective experience, moderate trauma, ok group of residents. I think that if you only have a realistic chance of matching there if you rotate (like I said, I didn't). SB: yes, heavy trauma, but busy on almost all services (VA is exception) LOTS of COMMUTING (what I considered the only real downside to this program), great residents and even better attendings (maybe not big names but love teaching and love their residents), expensive to live on LI (I grew up there).
That is what comes to mind now...I liked both programs and I got the sense that I would become an excellent surgeon at either of these places.
