have checked past posts on NYMC, LIJ, and SB. am considering aways for the fall and am thinking of these 3. In terms of what i'm looking for, academics isn't really it but would still like to have the option. These programs are known but not the big ones in NY where i'm looking. Any advice? Any experience beyond what's been said? Any knowledge of who they like, degree of difficulty at matching in terms of numbers. I've heard some not so great things about SB but never anything specific other than heavy trauma. thanks for whatever you throw out.

Stony Brook: get worked hard, tons of trauma, even more driving (cover 4(?) hospitals, and are all 40 minutes from each other)
LIJ: More cush, good operative experience
NYMC: ?
that's all I have.....

Didn't rotate at any but got to visit LIJ and SUNY SB for interviews. Both are excellent programs. Neither have ?strong? academics (LIJ stronger than SB, however)? they both seem to be more ?hands on programs.? LIJ: has lots of research funding (a surprise when I went), strong elective experience, moderate trauma, ok group of residents. I think that if you only have a realistic chance of matching there if you rotate (like I said, I didn't). SB: yes, heavy trauma, but busy on almost all services (VA is exception) LOTS of COMMUTING (what I considered the only real downside to this program), great residents and even better attendings (maybe not big names but love teaching and love their residents), expensive to live on LI (I grew up there).

That is what comes to mind now...I liked both programs and I got the sense that I would become an excellent surgeon at either of these places.
