Since everybody seems to visit the med students' section, I'll post this question here. From the experience of any of you, how common is it for senior authors/ project managers to steam roll the ones who actually do the bulk of the work, including writing manuscripts, and place themselves as first author in order to earn points to achieve Professor status? I have come across the two ends of the spectrum in ortho (one hand surgeon told me to take his name off the first author since he didn't do the manuscript- that was a Class act), but I am not sure how often this type of behavior occurs.

i think that will just vary according to the personality/ethics of different people/attendings you will run into and will not be something easily quantified into how common it is (ie, if it happened to you you might think it was pretty damn common!)
