I am from the UofR program and would like to help reply to your question. The Strong/University of Rochester program did not lose affiliation with Rochester General Hospital, rather decided to withdraw its residents from that hospital. After June 2003 we will no longer rotate at Rochester General Hospital (this currently accounts for 10wks our 3rd year and 10wks our 4th year). We still have maintained resident rotations at one of the other community hospitals, Highland Hospital, and in fact it is highly probable that one of the residents taken from Rochester General Hospital will in part be added to the resident group at Highland thus helping to preserve this resident's community training experience. It is true that a decent amount of our joint exposure is at Rochester General (not so much arthroscopy experience, the best of that is at Strong and Highland), but just as well we have a large total joint/general experience at both Highland and Strong.
Over the recent years, the University has been adding more and more faculty at Strong and Highland with higher and higher volumes of surgery each year. Our operative case load continues to increase as residents. Just as all programs in the country, we had to make changes to adapt to the pressures of the work hours requirements. This is one of those changes. Residents and faculty have come together to decide the best way to allocate the rotations in such a way as to protect the operative experience the best that we can.
Our residency has always had the reputation of providing excellent technical training as well as a well rounded academic experience; residents and faculty alike would like to maintain that reputation.
I hope this helps. If you have other questions or concerns, I invite you to contact the residency coordinator and ask to be put in contact with one of the residents, we would be happy to talk with you.
