Here goes...

1) Vanderbilt-Solid from top to bottom. Perfect blend of academics with great operative experience and a very livable city. Residents among the best I've met.
2) Utah-Wow, Salt Lake is beautiful. Have all bases covered with an amazing, young and energetic staff.
3) Wisconsin-Zdeblick is a great chairman. Some of the best residents you'll ever meet. Great city to live in.
4) Iowa-Powerhouse academic program with great chairman and fantastic staff.
5) Michigan-Fun Big-Ten city with a great hospital and great elective volume.
6) Carolinas-Amazing program, but I have ambitions to teach and there is no medical school affiliation. Perhaps a bit too private for me.
7) Mayo-Unbelievable facilities. Just didn't fit in like I did with above programs.

1 MUSC-great town, cool res., nice mix of univ. and priv., drawbacks are weak sports and low oper. vol
2. UF jax-new well known chair with big plans and seems to be getting done, good city, best residents i met but high indigent pop.
3. Wake-best ORs i've ever seen, very well rounded training, cool attendings, boring town,
did feel like i meshed too well with the residents
4 MCV -seemed like the most malignant place i interviewed
5 IU-thought it was the best program i went to, but i didn't want to live in the midwest
6 Stony brook- near nyc, nice place to live but too much driving and didn't learn much about it during my interview

I wanted a program on the coast and I got denied by san diego and hawaii. good luck to everyone

1) Emory - did an away and loved it, well rounded, good guys, good city, a little trauma heavy
2) Carolinas - great place
3) Greenville - probably better program than Charlotte - would rather live in Charlotte though
4) Orlando - A bit small but also a great place
5) AMC - solid, good city
6) Tulane - good residencts, charity is a minus
7) UF - good but college is over

Maryland - structured but strong, Shock trauma
9) LSU - headed in the right direction
10) Mayo - cold and stuffy, questionable operative experience, more on the nerdy side, but amazing facilities

mine was mostly regional, and I'll be happy to match, good luck

1) Carolinas- Great place, fun city.
2) CWRU- Very strong program, Cleveland is a cool city if you dig a little
3) Ohio State-Great new chair, great group of residents. Columbus is awesome, plus you got the Bucks.
4) MCW-Good group of residents. Nice approachable faculty. Nice facilities.
5) Campbell Clinic- Probably best group of residents I met. Excellent faculty. Awesome all around experience.

Overall, very happy with my list. Would have liked Campbell to be higher but couples matching/geography played a significant role. Good luck to everyone. :tongue:

1. Loyola - best combination of happy residents, operative experience, and didactics
2. Rush - very good fellowship placement and great operative/didactic experience
3. U Penn (5 yr) - residents seemed very happy
4. U Wisconsin - Madison - phenomenal place with great lifestyle and Dr. Zdeblick seems great
5. Univ. of Illinois - Not as academic as I would like but it's in Chicago and you get to operate a lot
6. Jefferson - strong all around and in a good city
7. UCLA - purely based on location and happiness of residents
8. Henry Ford - can live outside of detroit in a nice area and get good operative trauma...also, 25% off some new vehicle purchases!

happy, good groups of residents, if not on west coast would like to be in IL, not too academic

very well rounded program with great attendings and nice lifestyle, plus in Chicago

1) HSS..... Simply awesome facilities. Name. Residents friendly but a tad @#$%y. I think I could deal with it. NYC+
2) Harvard..... Like the size, the three big time hospitals. Boston +. Again a little stuffy and formal but the benefits outweigh the negatives for me.
3) Pitt (V)..... The Fu factor. Great balance. City is a little lacking.
4) Wash U.... Again awesome facilities. Great Faculty. Great academics. Operative experience is solid.
5) Duke ..... I'm partial to NC. Formal but got along with a few of the attendings really well.
6) Pitt (VI) ..... Not psyched about the 6th year but again I think it would pay off in the end.
7) Vanderbilt.....Great group of residents. I agree that Nashville is a liveable city. Everyone seemed happy. Great tradition.

CWRU ..... Nice residents, Good balance of big name attendings/crazy cases and attendings dedicated to teaching/walking residents through cases. Cleveland sort of sucks though)
9) HJD ..... I really liked Zuckerman and Jaffe. Fancy name. Didn't like the Big $$$ for rent.
10)Miami .....Great Program. Great Residents. Great parties. Great girls.
11) UNC ..... Great core group of faculty. Strong academics. Great college town. A little small for me.
12) Penn ..... programs name is tied to the overall university name in my opinion. Nice residents. May have just been tired when I interviewed there and it was daamn cold. Philly isn't really my style
13) UTSW ..... Great residents. Well respected. Great operative experience. Tons of trauma. maybe too much
14) Loyola ..... Nice small program but a little too small for me.
15) Emory ..... Solid young faculty. Nice city for a young guy. Looking for a more academic setting

18) Brown- didn't like the 6th year. Providence is way too small and cold
19) Columbia-just didn't get that feeling
20) Georgetown- Very nice program. Too small. Too in bred. I had this image of a fancy hospital that was all modern and nice but that is not the case. D.C. didn't do much for me.

Hopefully this will help the guys that have to go through this next year. It really is personal preference that makes the difference. No. 1 decide what you want in life and where you see yourself. Academic vs. Clinical. Very few are balanced. I have no ties. No couples match. No particular geographic preference. Lots of crazy ambitions. So I decided to go with the academic list and we'll see what happens. Good Luck

2. Utah - fantastic location, good residents, well balanced experience.
3. Wisconsin - great chairman, nice town, good lifestyle, happiest residents around, solid experience, cold.
4. U. of Wash - liked the residents, name, trauma exposure - but fellow heavy, high housing cost, seemed to have high scut factor as a lower level
5. Dartmouth - beautiful location, nice new med center, good residents, not a lot of job opportunities for spouses.
6. Mayo - Amazing facilities, name, top attendings, operate later in training
7. Campbell - tradition, good op experience, 3 months each year (6 mo as a pgy2) at the Med (+ and -), memphis
8. Wash U - name, solid op experience, academic, didn't feel I fit with personalities of the residents
9. OHSU - skywalks, chairman definitely moving things in the right direction, cool town, without a sports guy until this year.
10. UNM - not a great town but great surroundings.

1. OHSU-great chair, great faculty,great residents, great research opportunities, great city to live in...you get the point
2. Utah-great program all around, skiing near by, family in area
3. Loyola-great chair and faculty, solid program, residents were happy...thought it would be fun to live in/near Chicago
4. Indiana University-I also think this was one of the best programs. Trippel is awesome, Dr. Stewart, the new traumatologist is great, the residents were cool and happy....I had a hard time deciding where to put this program
5.UCDavis-Solid program, very trauma heavy....maybe too much trauma
6. U Arizona-good program, seems like a nice place to live, 1:1 attending:resident in OR
7. U New Mexico-well kept secret, great program, great faculty, plenty of trauma, Albuquerque is + or -
8.LSU-up and coming program, residents were happy and confident, would have ranked it higher except for the probationary status
9. Maricopa-risky program given their history, I didn't feel like I would fit in there
10. Henry Ford-Good program, but it is in Detroit
11. Wayne State-Big program, too many residents for my taste, trauma department is leaving and it is in Detroit, plus there was a shooting in the ER at Detroit Receiving Hospital while we were touring in the ER...too exciting for me!
12. UCDavis 6 year research program-I don't want to dedicate another whole year of residency to doing research. ( but I do want to match

There were a ton of factors that I considered when making my list. I guess I ended up having a good "gut feeling" about the more academic/bigger rep. places that I visited. I also considered OR experience, reputation, the city, how i got along with the residents and attendings that I met, etc. It's hard to weigh which factors are more important, and it really does become an individualized process. Since I am leaning towards academia, that played a bigger role for me (i guess i'm one of the few who told the interviewers this and really meant it).

Not to start up the big debate again, but I think that you can be an excellent surgeon (skills-wise) coming from a more academic program, and vice-versa (know the academics well at a more clinical program).

There are so many good programs out there, I just hope that everyone ends up in a place that they will be happy. A huge part of your residency experience will be what you make out of it. Good luck to you all.
