Matthew Colman is seeking an ambitious medical student (between Third and Fourth Year) who is interested in pursuing a year-long clinical research fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Colman is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University, and is dual fellowship trained in spine surgery and orthopedic oncology. He is a busy clinician but is also the director of spine research in the department of orthopedics and the director of spine oncology research for Rush University Cancer Center. Strengths of the fellowship include:
  • One-on-one mentorship model with Dr. Colman
  • High volume publication and presentation schedule (24 original manuscripts in 2022)
  • Extensive network and proven track record for matching at competitive programs in orthopedics
  • Community of interaction and networking with other departmental researchers, residents, and fellows
  • Variety of research applications: clinical, database, translational, basic science, and biomechanics all available depending on applicant skill set and preference
  • Clinical/surgical shadowing available
Prerequisites for the position include:
  • Completion of MS3 year at an accredited US institution 
  • Desiring of a career in academic orthopedic surgery
  • Strong research background with statistical package experience
  • English as a primary language
Most qualified applicants will have:
  • Strong independent work ethic
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Board scores and clerkship grades reflective of a strong future candidate in orthopedic surgery
Fellowship responsibilities will include:
  • Twice weekly research meetings to review project progress, answer questions, brainstorm original hypotheses
  • Participation in research projects at all stages: conceptualization, hypothesis generation, literature review, data collection, data analysis, abstract preparation, troubleshooting, auditing, manuscript preparation
  • Presentation at national meetings
  • Grant preparation
  • Study group coordination
  • IRB and research compliance coordination
