How important is it to attend a social event at a program where you did a rotation? They know me pretty well and vice versa, considering I was there for a month. However I really want to match here and I figure it would reflect badly if I'm not there. On the other hand, it would mean sacrificing an interview. Anyone have any input?

I have the same problem and will be missing the social event. I feel that the interview at another program gives me a better shot at matching and the social event is not that important. Plus they all understand when you say "I would have come but I was interviewing". Remember they all just did this same crap a few years ago.

Does ANYONE out there think you will have less of a chance of matching if you don't go to the social events (due to another interview). It seems obvious to me that they are more likely to remember you and assuming your not a jackass, prefer you to someone they only met on interview day.

Any other thoughts? Anyone think these events actually do what they intend?

Are most of you missing these events if you have an interview elsewhere the day before?

I would take the interview over social event any day unless program director is actually present. Many programs don't keep tabs on the students during social events, and since there are so many students, that even if you are present, some residents don't remember you the next day during the interview.

From my experience, residents have little say in who gets in unless they are the chief/senior residents who are actually interviewing you.

Since you rotated, I don't think it matters.
