Reply Summer Research Advice
Could anyone give advice on summer research for medical students (obviously between year 1 and 2)? I am trying to decide where to do research, my home school (CWRU) or should I try to go somewhere else. Does CWRU have a good reputation in ortho?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If your school is invovled in any kind of ortho research, I suggest that you stay there for research. It gives you a good opportunity to later on get excellent letters of recommendation.

Depends on where you want to go. If you have a particular program you're interested in, do research there. If not, just stay at Case. It does have a great reputation for ortho.

I have been reading through the past messages here, and it sounds like CWRU does have a pretty amazing program. I know that ortho is a really tough match, but if I am interested in going back to NYC for residency, will research here at CWRU be sufficient? I've heard some people say that you should do research wherever you want to end up for residency.

So I guess my question is does the strength of CWRU's program carry all across the country, or should I still try to do research where I want to end up for residency?

Thanks for your input. It really helps to hear comments from people who have been through or are going through match.

Yaya,

If you know exactly where you want to go for residency, then doing research at that program will help you if you work with the right people who are influential in the selection process. But most people don't know where they want to go until 4th year when interviews are well under way. CWRU does have a very good program, but obviously, if you have a program in NY in mind, it's better to do research there. I think the quality of the project and your level of involvement is more important than where you do it.
Bottom line is that your board scores and grades are most important, and research is just icing on the cake. I know of people with no research experience who have gotten interviews from the top programs in the country just because of their credentials. I say this so you don't stress too much about where you do research. Do it where it's most convenient for you. If you want to go to a program in NY, you can do a 4th year elective there and get to know people, so it's not essential to do research at that program. One other thing: if you go to CWRU, how can you possibly follow up on a project in NY ??

Reply follow up
That's a good point about following up on the research project. It would be pretty difficult to complete a good project over just 1 summer, so @#$uming the project goes longer then it would be impossible to keep working from Cleveland. I'll have to factor all this in.

Thanks for the input.
