I rotated there earlier this year so I think I have a good handle on its strengths and weaknesses. The biggest issue at UMass is the departure of its chairman a few years ago. Since then, the program had been in a little slump. However, recently the program has begun to rebound with several new attendings joining the staff and the signing of a new chairman who is very strong in academics and research. As for experience, it is true that their operative experience is great. The University campus is heavy in trauma but you also do some joints and peds. At the Memorial campus, it is more community like (large number of joints being done) and call is much different. They also go to a day surg hospital for sports and hand, and travel to New England Baptist for joints and spine. Overall, good exposure to trauma & joints, good exposure to hand, peds & spine, less exposure to sports & foot/ankle and min. exposure to tumor.
Overall good program that will be much, much better in the near future with the new chairman. Residents are great surgeons and you can't beat the closeness amongst the residents.
