I interviewed at USA. They recently got a new chairman, Dr. Fred Meyer (a pretty well respected hand surgeon), who is liked by the residents. He also, apparently, is better liked by the community orthopods than the previous chairman and this has led to more opportunities for the residents to train with some of the private guys out in the community of Mobile. When I interviewed they were looking to hire additional staff, especially in the area of trauma. Its a small program - they only take 2 residents per year and I think they have only 3 or 4 full time faculty (unless they have hired someone recently). Overall its not a malignant program. The residents are a pretty likable group, seem to get along well, and seem happy. They see a good bit of trauma but they get one full weekend off per month. Not much in the way of perks - book money, etc... Mobile is a decent place to live. The downside for me was that the rumor last year was that a few Ortho programs around the country could be cut in the next few years and they would probably start with some of the small, 2 resident per year programs. I have no idea if this will actually happen but it concerned me enough that I ranked USA near the bottom of my ROL. That having been said, I would not have been terribly disappointed to have ended up at USA. I think you get pretty good training there, the staff (that I met, anyway) seemed resident friendly, and the residents seemed to get along.
Good luck and I hope this helps a little.
